The rivers Mura, Drava, and Danube flow through Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia, creating one of the largest wetland habitats in the world – the European Amazon. The European Amazon (TBR MDD) has become the world’s first protected area jointly managed by five countries and recognized by UNESCO.
The film Amazon at the Heart of Europe tells the story of this region, which over 250,000 birds choose every year as a resting and feeding ground before continuing their journey southward.
Although it is not easy to change long-standing water management practices in a short time, WWF Adria is investing efforts to implement nature-based solutions that benefit both the habitats and species living there. These solutions also help improve flood protection and enhance the recreational value of the area.
