Szabó István is the laureate of the second Novi Sad Film Festival for his contribution to world cinematography.

Szabó István is a Hungarian director and a living legend of world cinema. Mephisto, winner of the Oscar for the best foreign film, was filmed in 1981 based on the novel of the same name by Klaus Mann. In addition, Szabo was nominated three more times for the most prestigious Oscar film award for the films Confidence, Colonel Redl, and Hanussen.

His films have been nominated twice for the Golden Globe, and Colonel Red has been awarded a BAFTA Award and the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. The screenplays for the films Sweet Emma, Dear Böbe, and Sunshine won the European Film Academy Award for Best Screenplay, as well as the Special Jury Award in Berlin. The Day of Daydreaming and 25 Fireman's Street won awards in Locarno. Father Grand Pri at the Moscow Film Festival.

Szabó graduated from the Film Academy in Budapest in 1961 as one of the most talented students. In 1990, he taught at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade.
