Biografija

Biography

Zoran Perisic is the laureate of the Novi Sad Film Festival's Award for Contribution to the Development of Animation and Visual Effects.

He is a director, producer, writer, visual effects supervisor, consultant, cinematographer — and inventor. Perisic is an Academy Award and BAFTA winner for his work on visual effects in Superman (1978), and an Oscar nominee for Best Visual Effects in Return to Oz (1985). He also received an Academy Award for Scientific and Technical Achievement for developing the Zoptic Front-Projection System — the groundbreaking technique used to depict Superman flying in Superman I, II, and III.

He studied at both the University of Birmingham and the University of Belgrade. Early in his career, he worked as a cameraman on animated and industrial documentary films in the Midlands (UK), before joining the production of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) in London.

Perisic has worked on visual effects for numerous high-profile feature films and is the author of four books on animation and VFX cinematography, published by Focal Press. He also wrote and directed two animated children’s TV series (Magic Fountain and Captain Cook’s Travels) for Yorkshire Television.

As a director, he helmed the action-adventure feature film Gunbus (also known as Sky Bandits, 1986) and the family film The Phoenix and the Magic Carpet (1995), which he also produced.

Zoran’s passion for flight extends beyond visual effects — he is also a licensed private pilot. Unsurprisingly, his children’s novel An Alien Called Freddy tells the story of a boy who can fly. As an inventor, he holds several patents, including those for the Zoptic Front Projection and Z3D, a single-camera stereoscopic 3D system.
