John Smiley Youngs was born in New York. After relocating to Los Angeles, he completed his studies at the American Academy of Performing Arts and went on to star in Eric (1975). In the early 1970s, he made his Broadway debut in Fiddler on the Roof, playing one of the sons, after one of the actors became ill. He caught the eye of Robert De Niro, which led to his first major film role in the Oscar-winning war drama The Deer Hunter (1978).
One of John's most recognized roles was in Miloš Forman's 1979 film Hair (1979). He was the Claude Hooper that Bukowski recruited. Critics and film historians praised his performance then and now.
In the 1980s, John's performance as Charles Heller in the criminal thriller Amateur (1981) earned him a nomination for a Genie Award as Best Foreign Actor. He also portrayed Captain Rudy Ransom in a two-part episode of the hit television series Star Trek: Voyager (1995) in 1999.
John was further recognized for his two Emmy Award-winning television shows, Carnival (2003) and Dark Angel (2000), for which he played recurring roles as Henry Scudder and Donald Lydekker, respectively.
In the 2010s, he starred opposite Kirk Harris and Michael Madsen in Vernon Mortensen's 2013 western thriller The Sorrow, appeared in the horror film Tales of Halloween (2015), and played a supporting role in the romantic comedy The Hit List (2011).
