When detective Lemmy Caution arrives on the planet Alphaville, he checks into a hotel under the alias Ivan Johnson. The city (which resembles 1960s Paris) and the entire planet are controlled by a computer called Alpha 60, which has outlawed human emotions—logic is the only acceptable way of life. Caution’s secret mission is to locate Professor Von Braun, the creator of Alpha 60. He soon meets a girl, Natasha, Von Braun’s daughter, and falls in love with her—but she is unable to love, as it is deemed illogical.

The detective is arrested and interrogated by Alpha 60. There, he uses his secret weapon: the language of poetry, which confuses the logical computer. Once released, he discovers that the computer plans to conquer the entire galaxy. He confronts Von Braun, who is developing a secret weapon, and kills him. Caution then destroys Alpha 60, causing the collapse of the entire city, but manages to rescue Natasha and escape with her by car, teaching her how to love.
